| The Centre for Alternative Wastewater Treatment at Fleming College |
The Centre for Alternative Wastewater Treatment (CAWT) promotes constructed wetlands and other innovative forms of wastewater treatment through applied research, education, and demonstration projects.
Located at Fleming College in Lindsay, Ontario, CAWT is at the centre of the school's state-of-the-art Environmental Technology wing. This wing has earned Fleming College the distinction of ‘Outstanding Leader in Sustainable Energy Practices’ by the provincial energy minister’s Conservation Action Team, and Natural Resources Canada has called the new wing one of the most energy efficient buildings in Canada. The building is with geothermal wells for heating and cooling, intelligent lighting systems, a wind turbine for supplemental power, and a green roof and living wall. CAWT’s research program and facilities are a major feature of the Environmental Technology wing. Using on-site constructed wetland wastewater technology, the Centre can treat approximately 3,000 litres of wastewater a day from the new wing’s washrooms. The wetlands are also being used to treat commercial aquaculture wastewater.
Focused primarily on cold-climate constructed wetland research, CAWT also offers education resources, research support, project design services and more.
